Well past his prime, pitch icon Pele emerged from semi-retirement to play for the New York Cosmos in 1975. Unrivaled by performers before or since in terms of contributions to the game, Pele single-handedly gave the sport’s popularity a significant boost in North America with his presence alone. In the realm of match-worn apparel, it doesn’t get any better than this sacred garment: a shirt worn by Pele during his tenure (1975-1977) with the Cosmos. The white cotton long-sleeve pullover jersey features a Cosmos team logo patch sewn to the left breast, while three gold-colored five-point stars are embroidered to the right breast. In teal twill with a yellow embroidered outline, Pele’s famed number “10” is sewn to the back and right sleeve in block-style numerals. A vintage “ATHLETA” label resides within the green-and-yellow striped stretch ribbed cotton collar. Solid match wear is evident with color fading throughout and puckering about the twill components. Accompanying is an LOA from the son of the former Brazil team masseur.
