To this day, baseball historians continue to explore and debate the origins of the game. Certainly Abner Doubleday had a hand in popularizing the game, but the obvious truth is the game developed organically with contributions from many known and unknown participants. In this case we recall Doubleday's distinguished military career, which is well documented. During his thirty years of service, he took part in the Mexican-American War, the Seminole Wars and the Civil War. Stationed at Fort Sumter, he is cited as having fired the Union Army's first shot of the Civil War, a cannon round in retaliation to the Confederate Army's opening bombardment. Doubleday also fought gallantly as a commanding officer at Antietam, Gettysburg and several other important Civil War battles, rising to the rank of Major General. Presented is a Doubleday cut signature with inscriptions noting the highest military ranks he held. Measuring 3-1/8 x 1-1/2", this crisp, clean cut shows minor signs of wear including light rippling, but remains appealing. Doubleday's autograph shows pleasing ("8") strength and is accompanied by the inscriptions "Bvt Brig Genl U.S. Army, late Major Genl of Vol". Full photo LOA from JSA.
